I can totally understand why, he's really being oblivious, but maybe (as I thought) he would be expecting Dean to speak up if something was wrong - and totally forget that he told Dean to be a good soldier. Ahhhhh! The conflict is almost ready made! Which is what makes writing John so fun. : D
