I like to think that the reason he was so easily thrown off is that he was squicked by the mental institution, and he figured that they couldn't possibly get out...
And I also figured that Hendrickson was on his way to the Impala, but couldn't quite track it down because the local police didn't realize what they had, and then the paperwork for it somehow mysteriously went missing. Perhaps that could have been reasoned out by one of the boys, as in Dean wondering why the hell they got to the Impala before Hendrickson, and then coming up with no answers.
