Dean is the villain, interesting, I think that's a very apt way of looking at him in this piece He certainly is pissed off because this is his golden moment and Sam's screwing it up left and right, in spite of trying not to every minute of every day. So it hurts Sam more than a beating, having Dean give him the cold shoulder. He is only 16, like you say, just at the stage when everything Sam does irritates him anyway, so it's a short leap to telling Sam he sucks.
Just so you know, the tripping of Sam *was* going to be followed by yet another beating (a horrible one on the stairs, no less), but when I thought about it, it just seemed over the top. Because Sam after all isn't butting heads with John, he is trying to walk away. Only he uses that *tone* and that's what gets him into trouble. I decided the threat of something worse, plus the mixed up pep talk would be more horrific at this point. And you can't beat the kid *all* the time, it would sort of dull the edge of that particular blade.
My favorite part is when Sam panics because he thinks that John will think that he popped the blister on purpose, but while John would have been peeved, he's not the type of father to hand out a beating about that. Only Sam can't see it that clearly, the poor guy.
And YES, there will be otter pops. You won't know where, you won't know when...and neither will Sam. Did the box fans help at all?
