I don't think you're quite alone in feeling sorry for all of them, because I sure as heckfire do! All of them are suffering and they barely know how to communciate that, really. Except Sam, who hesitates not one bit to open that lovely mouth of his and call bullshit, when appropriate. And yea, I think you're right, they've all got their reasons for what they want, and it's not all entirely at odds.
