I think my vidding aesthetics panel would have looked different if it were 1. run by someone who'd brought handouts or example vids or something and 2. weren't following on the end of a long period of years where vidders tried to come up with the Correct Way To Vid. All of the meta I found in 2010 when I decided to get into vidding was very One True Way-y, and it was a huge turnoff. I do think there are great discussions to be had about particular vidding aesthetics and how to better achieve them, but I hesitate to try to make it more universal than that since that usually turns into "Newbies suck!" or "Every vid from the 90s and before sucks!" or categorical statements about which musicians are never acceptable (starting with Celine Dion).
The 'How Do Vids Work' panel was fantastic though. It was a close reading of two different example vids, which was a great way to get that litcrit style discussion without the icky sweeping generalizations.
