Thank you! This is very useful information. It seems like the law is all over the place, and smudgy at the ends; what is okay in one state is not okay in another. So how and who determines what is legal and what is not? I think it would come down to the situation....

And in Stiles case, yes, he would only tell his dad if he had to, if it was necessary.

Or maybe, as a few have suggested, the Sheriff would "find out" and it would go from there.

I'm still wondering why so many fic feel the need to have it happen in either case. Hell, I'm thinking about it myself, how would I do it, in a fic.
