I think he was a little out of it while in the hospital, maybe still suffering the effects of the meds, or even, the spell of being in custody 24/7. But perhaps when he got out, he found he was still in over his head, and unable to keep his hands off Sam. Poor baby. : D
(And yes, I agree! He shouldn't have left Sam in the condition he did!)
