I wanted Sam to escape too, but I wanted to stick with canon, so he couldn't actually get away, alas. He certainly needed the break, even though it didn't get him anywhere. As for John, he's such a fun character and there's lots of leeway as to how he was when the boys were young. This particular summer, he had a specific goal in mind, training, and I think he's close to loosing his mind at Sam's resistance. And Sam...yeah, he's fun to torture!!
