Oddly, I always thought of myself as a Dean girl, DEAAAAAAAAAN all the way, you know? So then I took those "which character are you" tests, and came up Sammy. My sister said, "Of course, you're Sammy, you've always been Sammy." I wanted to smack her! That was last year. I wrote a bunch of stuff, and then started writing this verse, wherein, it's ALL about Sammy. Funny how that works. I relate to Sam a great deal, too.
The whole issue with John...some people make him downright horrible and mean and unreasonable, and then other people make him the soft, petting, hugging type of dad. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Comments in canon like, "If I'd a known you were going to mess it up, I never would have given you the damn thing," said to Dean, and the whole "What did you say to me?" comment to Sam - this is not a cuddling Dad. On screen, they seem to respect and to fear him a little, but they're not terrified of him. Otherwise, how would we get those very evocative, "Yes, sir!" in unison from the boys? (They're so sexy when they say it like that!)
