I saw this announcement, and I've not had a chance to check this out....but it seems interesting that the media companies should be allowed to do what they please, and to censor those who displease them. I can imagine that they'd be quite, quite displeased with fanfiction and fandom as a whole.

In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced last week, and there will be a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday.

If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China and Iran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed from the internet and not just in the US.

Please see the following article from the Huffington Post for more information.

Stop the Internet Blacklist

And if you are a US citizen, please take the time to sign this petition

This has been reported on boingboing.net as many of the posters there are against censorship. They love what they call remix culture like fanfiction and vids or music mashups. So through them I found out about the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Here is their petition...and now I'm off to sign the one you posted.

Very nice, and thank you for giving me the link.

I've sent on the information to a friend who's very up on the issue of censorship, and I'll send her your link as well. Hopefully, we can get the word out and talk to Senators and whomever is in on the vote on this.

Likewise in regards to your link. I'm so sad and disappointed that my senator, Dick Durbin, is on the committee for this bill. So many democrats on that committee! :(

It's just amazing.....I've updated my post to include the link to Morgan's LJ, she's the most copyright savvy person I know, I didn't mean to make it like a secret before.

And I've signed both petitions!

Yeah, Morgan!

And I'm trying to talk Amothea into going, but I think she's got other travel commitments, and I'm loathe to without her, except, yeah, I really want to go.....For the ocean, and the beer, and the talking, and the vids...yeah. : D

You both have to go...there needs to be arm twisting! My arms are long but not long enough to reach Alaska to twist Amothea's arms. But my arm can reach where you are...consider your arm twisted!

I hope I'm able to go because I'd love to see you and Bridie again! :)

Well my main commitment is the school stuff. I always have so much fun when we go. I kind of want to do everything.
