More realism, yeah! Here are some inside snaps of Platte. Luckily, that day, when I happened to have a camera AND film, the school was open AND empty, having just finished up parent/teacher conferences. My friend and I were able to wander the halls. We did ask permission of the first teacher we saw, told her we were former students, and it was totally cool after that.

What was once Platte Jr. High School is now Platte Middle School. How this helps the kids, I'll never know. At any rate, I wanted to take pics as the buses were arriving at the end of the day. I would have liked to have pics without any people in them, but when there are buses there are kids so what can you do. Here are the results!

One of the most important parts of this story to me was picking the right, downtrodden little location, with access to Platte by foot. I thought of using this dear little stone cabin that was quite small, but it was too nice. Instead, I picked this one.

I love realism in my stories, so you bet there's a Valmont Cemetary and it's in sad shape, considering how historical it is. It's at the very top of a ridge at the edge of town, right next to Valmont Butte. Valmont Butte has been used for years for gravel and brick making and there used to be a brick making company right there too. I think now it's just where the gravel company is, where their trucks are parked and so on.

Naturally I took pictures, or got pictures for this story. Some of them were used by Xterm to create her beautiful line drawing. Others were for my on reference. This post includes misc items for the story, including my favorite, mittens on a string!
