Why Did Dean Break After 30 Years and Not Before?

This is in reference to the 4.10 ep, Heaven and Hell, where Dean gives up the goods at the end and tells Sam the reasons why he doesn’t want to talk about hell. We find out the awful truth: that in order to stop the pain, Dean got up off the rack and became a torturer himself.

I realized I want to know WTF happened after 30 years that made Dean suddenly change his mind. I mean you don't go through 30 years of torture and then wake up one day and say screw this, do you? (I’m pretty sure Sam feels the same, but he’s being a Good Brother and giving Dean his space. For now, anyway.)

Maybe, after 30 years, maybe he hit his breaking point, maybe he got tired of Alistar coming by EVERY single day and just hit his limit.

When Dean said, at the end of Wishful Thinking, “…the things I did, the things I saw…” I instantly thought/figured/hoped that there was non-con between Dean and Alistar, because I’m whacked that way, and I kind of thought THAT would be the reason Dean broke. Not that he suddenly gave up one day. Or maybe Hell used Sam in some way, something that Dean thought was Sam.

What's most interesting to me is the fact that fanfic never considered that Dean could be broken, that he would make the choice he did as presented in canon. At least not the fanfic I’ve read. (I would be willing to be shown the error of my ways, however.)

I'd love to know what other people think!

Someone wrote a wonderful fic about this, but I forget who... it was basically the concept that Alastair came on the thirty-year anniversary (or what he told Dean was the thirty-year anniversary, anyway) and said that he wasn't gonna torture Dean today, because it was such a big anniversary. And right as he was about to walk away, he asked Dean if he could even remember Sam's face anymore. When Dean realized he couldn't, he completely lost it, and the next day, he agreed to torture others.

That sounded really, really plausible to me. Thirty years is a meaningful span of time as well, because it took nearly thirty years to create the Dean Winchester who went to Hell (he was 29), and it took thirty years to unmake him... to strip away his memories of his loved ones, his memories of himself, his personality and everything, until there was just pain and the absence of pain, making it an easy choice.

As for rape, I think Alastair definitely raped him, but I think it was probably just a regular thing along with the rest of the torture. I think we only got the relatively sanitized "carving, slicing" description because we're not on HBO or FX. :P

Some people think the 30 year mark is abitrary and yeah the when of it doesn't matter. If he broke he broke. But I think that 30 years means something. Didn't Jesus start his ministry when he was 30? And then three years later was on the cross at Golgotha? Or maybe it's just one of those times when Show makes something up that has a connection in reality!

Something like that. I'm sure there's a relation there. Or seriously. Sometimes I don't think Show knows what it's doing.

I hope Show doesn't know. Cause I don't wanna have a 'Son of Devil' - 'Son of God' Thing.

We already have each boy representing a side of the battle between good and evil.

Funnily, ha ha, the "good" boy (Sam) represents evil, and the "naughty" boy (Dean) represents goodness. BUT. At the same time the "naughty-but-good" boy is the one who spent 10 years torturing people.

In the end, however, I think both boys will rejoin with their humanity and go back on the road again.

Let's hope. Lately I have a bad feeling.

Well, what else can they do? They can't kill off either character, and the story must take a circular format. The boys must end up where they began, or no one will be satisfied. They must be "on the road" again.

I see two options.

1. Kripke ends the Show after Season 4 with a great bang, kills of both brothers.

2. Because Show is doing really well this season, we will get a weak Season 5, with nothing more to tell.

You're peeing on my parade, you realize that. Show is doing really well, we will get a season five, which will return us to the "saving people, hunting things" motif!

Maybe Castiel will fly away with Dean. With his fluffy wings.

Germany is a really small country. You could get to Kaiserslautern in like two minutes. On the Autobaahn. You order the chicken. It's wonderful. Then you get these lemony wipes in little packets that burn in just the right way. Have some beer with that, oh, LORD. Stomach growling now, thank you.

Small. Very small. 30 minutes in a taxi from one side to the other.

The lemon wipes were at a home-run resturaunt in that little town that I can't spell. It wasn't a chain. This was back in the late sixties!! I decided to walk down the street and thought it would be FUN to close the gate to the town. I backed up traffic for 10 minutes! The germans adored me. I was adorable. (The lemon wipes were part of the experience. We'd order the fried chicken, and they'd go out back, catch a chicken, kill it, clean it, and then cook it. It took ages. It was delicious.)

You should write something that your heart tells you to write. I will be happy to be your beta. I am a mean beta. But fair.

Yes, we Germans are known for adoring little children that run around with chicken legs and lemon wipes and are closing gates. We love those kids. No really.

You know, I think you would get sick reading any story of mine. Because if I write something it will be fluff. I am pretty sure about that. Schmoop. Distgustingly. That's what my heart will tell me. *sighs*

Oh, man. Those gates were SO cool. I have a thing for gates to this day. Gates and stone walls surrounding little towns...*sighs*

Seriously. The Germans were always petting me on the top of the head and letting me get away with murder. If I brought my American money to the candy store instead of German money, yeah. I'd get the candy anyway.

Why do you think you would write fluff? Couldn't it be part fluff and part kink?

I love to read kink. But I noticed that as much as I enjoy those stories I only read them once. The stories I read over and over again are always romantic. I love good plot and good voices and all that, but I need romance without kink to be really happy.

Oh, btw, I still haven't seen the latest ep. Only a few excerpts. Or whatever.
I can't watch it. Srsly. Everyone was like: awww, Castiel. I think I will throw up when I watch that ep. So I won't. *shakes head*

Was Castiel even in that one? I totally forget him the second he leaves the screen. Yeah...I guess he was in the ep, but really. You only need to watch the last three minutes anyway.

And everyone said: whoohooo Castiel loves Dean. What the hell did happen in that ep? Were they french kissing or what? *grumbles off*

Well there was this huge battle scene and Castiel was getting his ass whumped and Dean rescued him. Like he would do anyone.

I've reviwed my review...the only thing I can think of is that Uriel says to Dean that Castiel is fond of Dean. Castiel and Dean never had screen time alone together.

What it is is the fact that the people who want to slash finally can, non-wincest style. That's all. They're reading in SO hard to this pairing, it's amusing, because I just don't see it!

I think all the people who wanted to slash so hard, are already slashing wincest-style. I just hate the LIPS OF DOOM. *shudder* And that weak character. Brrr.

I didn't read your review yet. But I guess I will watch that f*cking ep sometimes.

What I've heard is that the lemmings have been desperate to slash. Some, yes, have fallen to the lovely and delicious evils of wincest. But the rest? This is their day. Gack.
