Breath of Heaven, continued...

"I have already asked him," she replied, her temper not quite breaking. "And he has given me no answer. What are you going to do, Mr. High and Mighty, beat it out of him?"

"Nadine...." began Sheriff Patterson.

Title: Breath of Heaven
Author: Lovesrain44
Genre/Rating: Gen/PG
Word Count: 11,636
Fandom: Dark Shadows
Summary: Willie buys the wrong kind of paint, and has to go back to the paint store. Along the way he runs into trouble, and ends up in the hospital. This sets Barnabas off because he doesn’t like modern doctors poking into his business.
A/N: When I first wrote this, I thought it was a quite gentle story, since Willie kind of gets rescued, but really, it’s one of the meanest I’ve done.

***

Barnabas whipped him. Hard. With a switch. Told him to take down his trousers, bent him over the table, and whipped him for an offense that seemed so inconsequential when he’d done it, that by the time Barnabas let him up from the table to pull up his clothes, all thought of it had vanished from his head. The only thing that remained was the leftover taste of his heart sliding into his guts from Barnabas pouncing on him the moment the sun went down, and the slices of acid heat that now marched up and down his backside and legs. The cloth beneath his armpits and along his back was soaked with sweat, and a single hot track of it traced its way along the back of his ear, sliding down his neck to join its fellows. Heart thumping, pushing blood through new cuts and welts that his pants now pressed against, his fingertips pulsing with each shivery jerk of his lungs.

I saw this announcement, and I've not had a chance to check this out....but it seems interesting that the media companies should be allowed to do what they please, and to censor those who displease them. I can imagine that they'd be quite, quite displeased with fanfiction and fandom as a whole.

In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced last week, and there will be a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday.

If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China and Iran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed from the internet and not just in the US.

Please see the following article from the Huffington Post for more information.

I think what I remember liking about this story was the intensity of the emotions shared between Bodie and Doyle. Of  course a love like theirs would never be easy, and the writer made it so real, you could almost reach out and touch it.

Amothea had been bugging me for ages to read SGA, and I finally broke down (without having watched a single SGA ep) and read something called "Indelible" which was about John taking corporal punishment on Rodney's behalf on (yet another!) alien planet with strange taboos that the team unwittingly breaks. I thought it was a pretty good story, right up my alley and all and I asked amothea if there was any more like it.

So okay. I have had this idea for at least two years now, that when I read a big bang (or any story) that I would write up what worked for me, and what didn't. It had mostly to do with the big bangs, for some reason, because the stories were long and juicy and writers put a lot of work into them. But for two years, I got a little skittish because of the feedback that people did get, sometimes turned into wank...and then this year, the spnanon meme picked up each big bang as a separate thread. Well, if I was going to make a comment, i would want to stand behind it.

I didn't like Voyager, I guess I didn't enjoy the thought of all those people being lost forever or something. Being a good Star Trek fan, i did try watching it, and then again, and then again, and then one time after that. For some reason, I never felt the love. But I found a quote anyway.

Back in the day, we wrote on paper and sent things through the mail. It was a slower, more old-fashioned kind of fandom that we had. To prove this point, I was going through papers in the laundry room and came across a stack of 3/5 cards with quotes on them from various fannish fics that I had read. I guess at the time, I was passionate enough to read so very closely and to take the time to write down a phrase or quote or whatever that seemed especially remarkable. And then I thought, either I can recycle the cards, or I can post the quotes and then recycle the cards. So what do you think I chose to do? Yeah....

So about that Big Bang for SPN this year. Every year I ask myself the same question, and that is, what do I have to say about the Big Bangs? Every year I contemplate giving feedback, and every year I don't. That's because sometimes, feedback isn't welcomed. Sometimes the writer just wants to write a really big, whopping story and be done with it. They don't care about feedback. And sometimes, people who give feedback get whomped on. Which isn't very fun.

I recently learned about the SPN anon meme threads regarding the Big Bangs for 2010. I have noted that LJ seems to be becoming a type of place where you get lambasted for the least opinion, so I can totally see why people want to remain anonymous, so they can be free to talk about stories as they see fit. But since I value the feedback I get from people on my stories so very much, I resisted taking a peek at what the anons would have to say about my big bang this year. But maybe that kind of feedback would have its own value; anons can say what they want how they want, and they don’t pull any punches. So I buckled and took a look.

In case you were interested, and it's okay if you're not, I decided to post the longish scene that I originally wrote back in 2007 when I first started watching SPN and wanted to capture the bleak sadness that I thought the boys would experience. It's not a bad scene, necessarily (given that it's three years old) but it was too much for the story. Anyway, here it is.

Title: The Things We Carry With Us
Author:
lovesrain44
Story Rating: PG
Genre: Slash
Word Count: 47, 654
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Warnings: Angst, emo, h/c, incest, terrible weather, touristy local tidbits, and far too many descriptions about food.
Summary: Sam and Dean are on the road, saving people and hunting things, like they always do. Dean discovers that Sam is attempting to turn himself into a monk, and so he does his best to get Sam laid. Sam resists because, of course, who needs to have sex with a girl when Dean’s around? It's about going on a roadtrip with your brother. It's about the food you eat, and the maps you follow. It's about the things you carry with you. (Takes place some time after Heart.)

Part 1 - The Haircut

It starts off with a haircut. Or rather, Sam thinks, it started off with Dean’s mouth open and going, as if because he keeps it closed so much, when it opens, he has no control over it.

Part 2 - Mammoth Spring

Sam wakes up early, but then he usually does. Usually he does a coffee and donut run, too, which puts Dean in a good mood for breakfast. But this morning, he stands by the edge of the window and pulls back the curtains just enough to let him look out, but not enough to wake Dean with the morning light.

Part 3 - Hunting the Kelpie

It’s best to hunt the whatever spell that raised the kelpie by daylight anyhow, for even though neither Sam nor Dean are stupid enough to fall for the kelpie’s call, she is free and running hard as night falls, and they would be hard pressed to resist her when she came and knelt in front of them, her diamond eyes promising them fair travel into the west country, where all good souls go, where everyone you ever loved is waiting for you.

Part 4 - Shamrock

In the morning, through breakfast and checking out of the motel, the rituals of their lives demanded that Sam converse with his older brother to discuss where they are going next. Even though Dean’s expression, however mild the conversation over the map and the local newspaper, tells Sam everything that he needs to know. That Sam should have taken a girl and had relations with her. Especially seeing what Dean had done for him.

Part 5 - Canadian

Breakfast at the Railroad Bar and Grill, which is attached to the motel, brings a meal so unremarkable that Sam knows he will be fantasizing about Jack’s Grill forever. Sam’s waffles turn to mush the second the syrup hits them. Dean’s eggs are cold.
