Part 6 -The Salt and Burn

When they go on the salt and burn, it is windy and chilly, but Sam’s warm on the inside with the memory of the afternoon. Which even though it had left an inordinate amount of art jumbled in his head, had been pretty much all systems normal between him and Dean. And pretty much perfect.

Part 8 - Brothers in the Snow

The first thing they do after breakfast, which was passable at best, is hoof it on over to the main drag where the shops are. Dean refuses to drive the car through the snowy streets, and Sam doesn’t blame him for that. The snow comes up to their ankles, and while at least it’s stopped snowing, no one has plowed the roads. The sun actually comes out while they walk as briskly as they can along the sidewalk, but it doesn’t seem to warm them. Sam thinks they probably look like idiots to the cars driving by, wearing sneakers and windbreakers; everyone he sees is dressed with thick down coats and wool hats like they’re ready for the North Pole.

Part 9 - The Morning After

It is morning. Sam knows it is morning because there is a grey light seeping in from between the partly open curtains. The heat is still cranked up, and his mouth feels like cotton, and his lips crack as he opens them to yawn. He feels worn out, like he’d run a marathon the day before. Dean followed him up the mountain and rescued him from the Yukki Onna. Had they destroyed her? Or would she still yet stalk the ravines and frozen river beds for unsuspecting hikers? He will have to do research, and that’s okay, it’s what he does.

My friend [livejournal.com profile] amothea and I skipped Escapade last year, not because we didn't want to go, but because we took a road trip across the country and went to Media West - we couldn't afford to do both. Although she and I had a good time, we found MW to be a bit...stodgy and pedantic, in that the vid show was a bust, the art room had NO porn (even though this con touts itself as being slash friendly), and there weren't very many interesting panels. The door decorating thing never happened, plus Lansing is a drag to fly in and out of. But the roadtrip was fun and amothea is the perfect traveling companion in that she let me make all the decisions. : D (Any of her requests were cheerfully granted, of course, but she didn't make very many.) We spent a great many hours, actually, reading the various summaries for the 2009 big bang and making an attempt to determine ahead of time whether we would like them or not. I don't think  I've ever had so much fun, truly.  (This was amothea's idea, as I recall, so many, many props to her.)

So this year, ESCAPADE! We have our own room, our own little vid show (which we'll have in the room over many beers -although the Escapade vid show is perfectly fine - we just love vids!), we have our favorite breakfast place staked out (although we're tempted to see if there are any others just as sweet), and we plan to stuff as much seafood into our mouths as possible. And go to panels! That's the trump card for Escapade (besides the great location, the excuse to go to the coast, the fabulous breakfast on Sunday, the GREAT art show and auction and the wonderful people we always meet there), so that's our pick for this year.

If you're a Numb3rs fan, and you're going, please look me up! Also, SPN fans, Professionals, Starsky and Hutch, Star Trek, all day, all night, all slash. I'm not going to want to come home. : D

So I don't know how many people on my flist are going to Escapade....but I thought I'd list the panels I'll be moderating, and I also have a question for any Numb3rs fans out there.

Title: Desert Water (A sequel to Fairy Lights)
Author: Lovesrain44
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Rating: PG
Summary: Dean and Sam have been hunting a chubacapra, but things go wrong and the beast takes a slice out of Dean. Sam's on first aid duty and the long vigil gives him far too much time to think about Dean's deal and the Grand Canyon and the moon and bee mead.
Word Count: 13,98
A/N: I started writing this story in fall of 2007 as a sequel to Fairy Lights as a way of coping with the fact of Dean's deal and his death at the year's end. Now, two years later, I wanted to finish it.  At that time I started it, I hadn't quite wrapped my head around the wincest factor, so this story is a reflection of a more chaste kind of love although, yes, their clothes do come off at the end.

Watching the shadows lengthen across the field in back of the house as he stood at the sink stirring sugar in his coffee was rather akin to listening to the sound of a clock ticking his life away. Not that he was in any trouble, not of the serious variety.

The hour was unknown to him as he rolled over yet again, taking the blankets with him and leaving the pillow. It was almost too much effort to drag the thing under his head, but his body knew that if he did it, he would be asleep inside of a second. Just like it had known the last ten times. And of course, as he did it, he was more awake than ever. He wanted to sleep, maybe he was half asleep already, with the rustle of rain against his window, the soft slough of wind somewhere in the trees, the almost touch of warmth against his skin in the cool room.

It was a day filled with sleeping rain. Whenever he opened his eyes, it was raining, the room somehow warm for all that, and still. No rushing of wind through the cracks of the windowsill. No floating scent of salt from the sea.

Mid-morning came too early, the sky a color of grey that always made him want to go back to sleep. But the chores wouldn't wait, and didn't, and after the fire and ash, the candles and wax, towards mid-afternoon, he headed into town to try and find Wesley. Who would, surely, be nursing a hangover as big as the state of Maine. Especially after falling off the wagon so hard he would attack Willie in the street. He couldn't really blame Wesley, if Wesley truly thought Willie had told Laura about seeing him drinking at Butcher's garage. No, not really. He knew the kind of rage that too much beer could give rise to. When you felt dead-ended, with no way out.

The Old House was cold and damp, and, except for the single light burning on the console in the front hall as he walked toward it, completely dark. It was obvious from that fact, and that there was no fire, nor any note for him to build one, that Barnabas did not intend to bring Miss Winters up for a visit. Willie stared at the candle, his hands fisting in the air in front of him, feeling the shiver move through his chest. A ripple that came and went, for-ward and back, like waves on a damp ocean shore.

Faith in the Atmosphere - Part 1 (A Dark Shadows Story)

Title: Faith in the Atmosphere
Author: Lovesrain44
Genre/Rating: Slash/R
Pairing: Willie/Barnabas
Word Count: 29,452
Fandom: Dark Shadows
Verse: Splinter Verse (#5)

Summary: Amidst the task of picking out paint for one of the rooms in the Old House, Willie encounters Wesley Dale, who has fallen off the wagon and gone back to drinking. Things get complicated as Barnabas encounters Wesley attacking Willie, and then, even worse, when Victoria witnesses the whole thing. It gets messier from there.

A/N: Willie can take it, I know that he can, but while I sometimes feel badly about treating him so horribly, I enjoy it too much to really apologize for it.

***

Willie bent over the counter, running his fingertip along the edge of the paint chip, leaving a streak that darkened the shade known as Heather Mist, and let his eyes wander over the array spread before him. After the counter guy had left him with as many shades of lilac as were available, he'd been completely ignored.
